The hero, Don Diego de la Vega, is reimagined as a (mixed-race) hero, born in the 1790s to a white father, Don Alejandro, and a Native American warrior mother named Toypurnia, who took the Christian name Regina. Trained in swordplay in Barcelona by a legendary master, Diego returns to California to fight imperialist oppression not just as a nobleman, but as the masked avenger, Zorro, backed by a secret society known as the Knights of the Broken Thorn .
Set in 1800s Los Angeles, the series follows Diego de la Vega (played by Christian Meier), a wealthy bachelor who secretly fights tyranny as the masked hero, Zorro. Diego’s life changes forever when he meets Esmeralda Sánchez de Moncada (played by Marlene Favela), a fierce, rebellious woman who arrives in California with her tyrannical father, Governor Fernando Sánchez de Moncada.
