Efforts to save the ship were unsuccessful, and at around 2:00 AM on December 25, 1940, Kapal Van Der Wijck finally sank, taking over 300 people with it. The survivors were left stranded in the water, forced to watch as their loved ones perished in the disaster.
The ambitious project was produced by and helmed by the veteran director Sunil Soraya , with his brother Ram Soraya also serving as a producer. The screenplay was adapted from Hamka's novel by Donny Dhirgantoro and Imam Tantowi . The filmmakers faced the substantial task of faithfully translating a beloved and complex literary work for the screen, a process that took a total of five years of preparation . The production design aimed to authentically recreate the look and feel of the Malay Archipelago in the 1930s, adding a layer of visual richness to the tragic love story.
Years later, fate brings the characters back together in Surabaya. Aziz's gambling debts and reckless lifestyle leave him completely bankrupt, forcing him and Hayati to seek refuge in Zainuddin’s grand home. Though Zainuddin harbors deep resentment, he provides them shelter. Shamed by his own failures and Zainuddin's generosity, Aziz leaves and later commits suicide, leaving a letter asking Zainuddin to take care of Hayati.
