Simultaneously, the time-traveling agents Balthazar Cavendish and Vinnie Dakota are on a mission to sabotage a pistachio cart operated by their rivals, Brick and Savannah. While lurking in an alleyway, Milo inadvertently runs past them. When Dakota returns Milo's cheerful greeting, the interaction triggers the Murphy effect, violently sending the time agents and their car back to the year 1875. Stranded in the Old West, Cavendish and Dakota are greeted by the local sheriff, who introduces himself simply as Sheriff Murphy—revealing that he is Milo's ancestor and the original catalyst of the family curse. They discover their time machine has been severely damaged and learn that Sheriff Murphy's presence has turned the town into a "time-travel Bermuda Triangle," where other lost travelers from various eras have become trapped.
