The film stars Lucas Black as Sean Boswell, a high school student from Maryland who gets into a street racing accident that leads to the death of a police officer. To avoid imprisonment, Sean's father, Harry Boswell (Brian Tee), sends him to live with his mother, Wendy Boswell (Yunjin Kim), in Tokyo, Japan.
Sean immediately clashes with Takashi (Brian Tee), known as the "Drift King" (DK), who has deep ties to the Yakuza organized crime syndicate. Sean’s arrogance gets the better of him; he challenges Takashi to a race and utterly destroys a Nissan Silvia S15 lent to him by Takashi’s business partner, Han Lue (Sung Kang).
