LOIC is an open-source network stress-testing and denial-of-service (DoS) application written in C#. It was designed to test network stability and performance by flooding a target server with TCP packets, UDP packets, or HTTP requests.

The Police and Justice Act 2006 amends the Computer Misuse Act 1990 to make unauthorized denial of service activities punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

LOIC is an outdated tool that modern Web Application Firewalls (WAFs) and DDoS protection services block instantly. For professional testing, use industry-accepted solutions:

Downloading pre-compiled software archives from unverified third-party websites or peer-to-peer networks exposes your PC to several critical security threats: 1. Built-in Malware and Trojan Horses

IT and security professionals often use the principle: "It is not the tool, but how you use it." LOIC is a tool that, like many others, can be used to either break or build systems. Its intended, legitimate purpose is to help network owners test their own infrastructure for vulnerabilities.

Allows testing specific ports (e.g., port 80 for HTTP).

LOIC was originally developed by Praetox Technologies as a network stress-testing application. It allows administrators to perform distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on their own servers to measure bandwidth capacity. Key Technical Features

To the previous commentator’s question: Does Groovy on Grails change things?
Well, first of all there’s also JRuby that is built on the Java platform. So you can have Ruby and RoR on Java directly. Then Groovy and Grails are there and provide similar capabilities. That changes things… but not in the way many of the old Java fogies may have anticipated: It validates DHH’s point of view in the strongest way possible. Dynamic languages are a powerful tool in any programmer’s arsenal–if you get exclusively attached to Java [1] and ignore dynamic languages, then do so at your own peril.

[1] The idea of getting exclusively attached to a particular language/platform is silly–they are just tools. Kill your ego. Open your mind and explore new technologies and techniques so you can use them when appropriate.
