To test the oil brushes, Staley used the brush to lay down a gradient of light gray shades on her canvas. For the painting phase, she used the "OIL - Oil Paint Opacity" brush, finding it "perfect for blocking in large areas" and noting it "has a lot of texture to it and blends colors well for creating the starting layers". She also successfully used a watercolor brush to add a wash of color to her line art layer, finding that "the watercolor brushes can layer on top of each other nicely to build up intensity of color".
