Applying Ian McHarg’s “Design with Nature” to Contemporary Environmental Planning
Today, as we face and rising sea levels, McHarg’s "Design with Nature" is more relevant than ever. His principles guide "Sponge Cities" in China, resilient waterfronts in New York, and sustainable urbanism across Europe.
While a PDF offers portability, Design with Nature is a highly visual book filled with complex maps, regional charts, and detailed site plans.

Ian McHarg was a Scottish landscape architect and writer. He pioneered the idea that human development should cooperate with seasonal, geological, and ecological patterns rather than fight them.

McHarg’s journey was not a linear academic path. He served in the British army during World War II, an experience that exposed him to the ruins of ancient civilizations across Italy and Greece, which later influenced his understanding of humanity's relationship with the land. After the war, he pursued his education at Harvard University, completing master's degrees in both landscape architecture and city planning. He returned to Scotland for a time but eventually moved to the United States, settling at the University of Pennsylvania in 1954.

The greatest technical contribution of Design with Nature was the introduction of a revolutionary methodology known as "overlay" or "ecological regionalization". Before the digital age of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), McHarg proposed a manual but highly effective method: creating successive transparent layers of maps detailing a region's physical characteristics.
