Unlike Old World tarantulas (which are fast and venomous), the Curly Hair is a that prefers to flick itchy hairs from its abdomen rather than bite. This docile nature makes it ideal for a beginner’s first tarantula .
Do not offer food for at least for adults (3–5 days for tiny slings).
A piece of cork bark, a hollow log, or a buried plastic flowerpot cut in half is mandatory.
(The PDF version includes all of the above sections with additional printable quick-reference charts, a habitat setup checklist, and a feeding and molt tracking log. Available in mobile-friendly and print-ready formats.)
Small plastic vials or deli cups with tiny ventilation holes.
Provide at least 4 to 6 inches of tightly packed substrate for adults to allow burrowing.
The Curly Hair Tarantula ( Tliltocatl albopilosus , formerly Brachypelma albopilosum ) is one of the most popular invertebrates in the exotic pet hobby. Known for their unique, woolly appearance and generally docile temperament, these terrestrial burrowers are excellent for both beginners and experienced keepers.
Do not mistake "tropical" for "swampy." Keeping a Curly Hair on soaking wet substrate will breed mold, mites, and cause respiratory distress.
Biting is a last resort. Their venom is mild (comparable to a bee sting), but mechanical damage from the fangs can hurt. Handling Guidelines Never handle your tarantula if it shows signs of agitation.
: They are generally calm and slow-moving, making them more tolerant of handling than many other species.
: Feed a diet of live insects, including:
Prey size should never be larger than the tarantula's abdomen (opisthosoma).
Tarantulas must shed their exoskeleton to grow. This process is called molting and can be stressful for new keepers to witness. Signs of an Impending Molt (Premolt) Refusal of food for weeks or even months. Abdomen becomes dark, shiny, and swollen. The tarantula becomes sluggish and lethargic. Webbing a silk mat on the substrate surface. The Molting Process
:
Wait 1 week before offering soft-bodied prey (like a crushed cricket). Resume normal feeding after 2 weeks.
The tarantula will flip completely onto its back. It is not dead.
When threatened, they use their hind legs to kick irritating hairs from their abdomen. These hairs cause severe itching on human skin and can cause medical emergencies if they contact the eyes or respiratory tract.
If the tarantula has kicked off its urticating hairs, the exposed skin on the abdomen will turn from a pinkish flesh tone to a shiny, dark, mirror-like black. This is the new exoskeleton forming underneath. The Molting Event
